USER P1 EDIT allows you to add to or change the items that appear on the LCD panel on the camera body. Typically they are functions that are accessed on a daily basis. P1 stands for PAGE1. Pictured here are the Panavision Default user items:

AUTO BLACK used to reset the blacks of the image
Hitting AUTO BLACK puts an internal cap on the CCD
AUTO BLACK can take a good 30 seconds.
AUTO BLACKs should be done on a regular basis especially: At beginning of the day, or after a break After a significant camera temperature change After changing MASTER GAIN

COLOR BAR SW turns color bars ON and OFF
The type of COLOR BAR is selected on page M9

SHUTTER SPEED controls the electronic shutter and determines the effective exposure time for each frame.
ECS is used to select other shutter speeds defined by ECS FREQ setting below.
As with film cameras higher shutter numbers imply more motion blur for each frame and therefore less perceived strobing, longer exposure times for each frame and therefore more exposure

ECS FREQ are user defined shutter speeds. Pictured here is the European and Australian standard setting of 172.8 degrees.
The available range is from 1 to 360 degrees.
ECS is also used eliminate horizontal bars when shooting CRT monitors. ECS stands for Extended Clear Scan, an old video term

MASTER GAIN changes the amplification of the signal. More gain means more exposure but also more video noise.
The gain range is: - 0.5 to + 2 stops

FILM TYPE changes the color response of the camera
TUNGSTEN is used with 3200 Kelvin lighting DAYLIGHT is used with daylight or 5600 Kelvin lighting, although some cinematographers prefer to use an 85 filter in front of or behind the lens.

FPS is only active when variable frame rate has been selected on page M6

SHUTTER from page P12 is sometimes added to the list. SHUTTER OFF is sometimes called a "360 degree" shutter. SHUTTER OFF increases the exposure by 1 stop relative to 180 degrees, and also increases motion blur. There is no real film equivalent to SHUTTER OFF.

To add items to the USER PAGE and therefore the LCD Menu, select an empty line and push the thumbwheel.
You can then navigate through a list of all the existing menu items (more than a hundred, by alphabetic order) and select the name of the item you want to insert.

There are 5 USER PAGES of items, labelled P1 to P5... more than you will ever need.
